SAVING THE BIRDS

Bird populations

have been falling at an alarming rate.

With deforestation and the planet increasingly bare, most of their natural habitat has been lost.

Homeless and hungry, they are very vulnerable to predators such as cats

and they easilly stumble onto wind turbines,

depleting their population even further.

Let's create a future where the birds are thriving

WHAT TO DO

  1. Provide food with a bird feeder

  2. Help insects: they are an important part of bird's diet

  3. Provide water

  4. Choosing energy supply reducing harm

  5. Provide shelter in the from of:

  • putting up nests designed for small birds

  • putting out nest building material (twigs)

  • Planting native trees

FEEDING THE BIRDS

Birds need:

seeds + fruits + worms

A lot birds typically eat insects including earthworms,

however, populations of insects are at critically low level due to the use of pesticides

and inadequate agriculture machinery with sharp blades destroying the earthworm population.

The prevalence of landscapes of farming land and cities being too different

to the forests and meadows that insects and birds are cut out for is also another factor for the decline.

As a result, birds are facing a severe protein shortage.

In some instances, this impedes their ability to reproduce.

It is crucial that birds absorb worms during the reproduction season.

For lack of available water, birds are often dehydrated and therefore are not able to digest dry worms. But if you order bags or live worms, birds will throw themselves at them and will even come down from the tree towards you.

It is best you check what birds are present in your area

and research exactly what these species typically eat

HOW?

Use bird feeders placed as high as possible.

You might need a pole.

Creating your own from reclaimed materials

can be a fun project although in some cases they get raided by squirrels, in which case this will be solved by using a feeder with a dome.

Cages wrapped around feeders are also effective.

WATER

Water is as indispensable to birds as food.

Water dipensers can be attached to trees.

Water in other accessible and safe places

is important as most bird species

have a bath every day,

a water feature or a pond is ideal

NESTS

The next generation needs somewhere to hatch.

Building a nest requires

not only a tree but also building materials.

If you look at cities, parks and even farming land,

you will notice that everything is super manicured

and that there are hardly any twigs anywhere at all.

As a result, there are hardly any nests being built,

for lack of building material.

You can either fit nests in suitable places

or even better:

leave out boxes of twigs

allowing birds to build their own.

A WORD FROM

CREATIVE VIBES FOUNDER

One day as I was walking in the street in London,

I saw a tiny bird pick up a piece of plastic

He flew up and dropped it the gutter of a nearby house roof:

the bird had no materials to build a nest with

and had elected a gutter as proxy for a nest.

Garbage from the floor such as plastic was to create padding

and insulation from the variations of temperature from the metal of the gutter.

This is too sad.

Please help the birds.

Small birds need nests that the larger birds won't kick them out off,

so boxes with very small entrances are key.

TREES

To bring all bird species around the world back to healthy numbers

and ensure the survival of the ecosystem in balance on the planet,

it is necessary to:

1. plant trees wherever possible

2. fund reforestation.

THE OUTLIERS

Some bird species pop up from other parts of the world,

escaped from houses, pet shops or zoos.

The natural ecosystems where these species live is challenged,

they are starting a new chapter in another part of the world.

They are in survival mode and the new land appears unhospitable to them at first.

As a result, they can appear to aggressively crowd out endemic species.

This is a temporary phase, once the new species feel at home and able to survive,

they will settle in harmony with the rest of the local ecosystem.

Much like a problem child, the more love and care they get,

the sooner they settle into harmony and respect with their environment.

Note that they may be on a different nutrition plan than the endemic species.

In the U.K., you may have noticed these friendly green faces.

The beautiful, friendly and very chatty ringneck parakeets

are looking forward to making friends in their new area.

Their diet needs to contain more fruit and berries than other birds.

ENERGY SOURCES

REDUCING IMPACT ON THE BIRDS

Renewable energies have different impacts on the planet.

Solar is neutral on bird populations.

Wind turbines cause the death of lot of birds

and produces sounds disrupting the fine tuned harmony of the ecosystem.

It is possible to use off shore wind energy

as there are many less birds above water than there are above land.

The effect of the noise produced by the turbines

is also less problematic there.

THE THERAPEUTIC

POWER OF BIRDS

Watching the beauty of birds and nature in general is therapeutic.

Listening to bird sounds has a powerful entrainment effect on the brain.

Some high security prisons in the US have tested showing nature documentaries

and have noted significantly reduced stress, irritability and agressions.

It reduced the number of incidents by 26%.

Accessing nature through technology is the best possible proxy, has true effectiveness,

and allows immersion in nature while at home or while in the office.

However, it can never be a full replacement for spending time in nature as it lacks:

1. Access to all the essential oils and other nutrients people absorb

through their skin or through breathing while in nature

2. Access to sun radiations

3. Sounds coming from random directions (bird calls in particular) in natural sourroundings

which cause the brain (the hippocampus) to pick up a habit of scanning in various directions for information,

thereby restoring abilities for orientation, balance and memory.

Through a computer or headphones, all sound comes from a predictable source

and is received consistently in the same angle, failing to stimulate some parts of the brain.

The daily recommended dose of connection with nature is a couple of hours a day.
